📝 Introduction

At the metal workshop in Sanjo, Niigata, visit the site where artisans showcase their ultimate traditional techniques in "manufacturing."

📖 Details

The forging and metal processing techniques cultivated in Niigata's Tsubame-Sanjo since the Edo period have been passed down to this day, earning a global reputation as a "manufacturing city." Founded in 1926 (Taisho 15), Suwada Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is renowned for its nail clippers and diagonal pliers, having won numerous awards both domestically and internationally, making it a highly regarded company. In 2011, the headquarters factory was remodeled into an open factory, allowing visitors to tour without prior reservation on working days. To facilitate the observation of the metal's condition during processing, the interior and work uniforms are all unified in black tones. The manufacturing process, which includes the forging process where heated metals are hammered to strengthen their shape, as well as the final steps of "grinding and polishing," is conducted entirely by skilled workers and is definitely worth seeing. The employee cafeteria is open for visitors to enjoy meals, offering the same daily lunch set as the artisans. Additionally, the factory features a café that serves light meals such as paninis, smoothies, and authentic cappuccinos, as well as a shop selling limited edition products.
