📖 Details
"Edo Kiriko" is a type of glassware made by carving patterns on the surface of Edo glass using traditional techniques known as "kiriko processing," with tools such as industrial diamond saws. In 1985, it was designated as a traditional craft by Tokyo, and in 2002, it was recognized as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, making it a nationally acknowledged masterpiece.
The so-called Edo glass refers to glass products produced using the glass-making techniques passed down from the Edo period. The glass raw materials are melted in a kiln at temperatures reaching 1500 degrees and then blown into shape. At Tajima Glass, the final step of the kiriko processing, "polishing," is done by hand, showcasing the delicate hues of the glass and intricate carved patterns. From glass manufacturing to kiriko processing, everything is done by hand, making each product unique.
Among them, the "Hoshimon Kiriko" features a traditional pattern that represents the twinkling of stars. The transparent cut surfaces create a beautiful contrast with the colored glass. The various expressions produced by light refraction are also quite fascinating. You can pour beer or chilled sake into it, enjoying the beauty of the glass while savoring a happy moment of evening drinks.
