🗺️ Setagaya Art Museum

📝 Introduction

A museum that offers a place to encounter art, integrated into the natural landscape of the park.

📖 Details

Setagaya Art Museum is located in a corner of Kinuta Park, surrounded by lush greenery that makes it hard to imagine being in Tokyo. Since its opening in 1986 (Showa 61), it has become a place that enriches people's lives and encounters with art. The museum's collection includes works from artists of different eras and styles, featuring both international artists like Henri Rousseau and Paul Klee, as well as Japanese artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Tadashi Yokoo. Among the most notable are the works of artists with ties to Setagaya, including those of Ryūsan Kitaōji. In addition to the museum's themed exhibitions, it actively hosts special exhibitions on various themes from outside the museum. The museum building, designed by architect Akira Uei, is nestled among the towering trees of the park and is designed as a low-rise structure with one basement level and two above ground, blending seamlessly into the natural landscape. Throughout the building, features such as corridors and passageways showcase a distinctive triangular theme, which is one of the museum's characteristics. Inside, there is a French restaurant and a café, where visitors can enjoy the park's scenery while relaxing, receiving high praise for the experience.
