📖 Details
Tennōji Zoo opened on January 1, 1915, and is a long-established zoo with over 100 years of history. Within its approximately 11-hectare area, it houses around 180 species and more than 1,000 animals. The zoo is dedicated to showcasing "the original ecology of animals," recreating environments that closely resemble the natural habitats of wildlife. The zoo is divided into various sections, including the reptile ecology hall "IFAR," the "African Savanna Zone" featuring animals like hippos, giraffes, and lions, and the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone."
In the "African Savanna Zone," in addition to areas displaying animals such as giraffes and lions that live in the African savanna, there are wolf enclosures where visitors can observe Chinese wolves (Tibetan wolves) and Siberian tigers, as well as various mini zoos. Visitors can also see animals like vultures and red pandas that inhabit this area. The "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone" includes nocturnal animal exhibits, baboon enclosures, and chimpanzee houses, and is also home to sika deer.
Additionally, there are crane houses featuring seven species of cranes, as well as Chilean flamingos and white storks, along with the very popular polar bear exhibit and an enclosure for Asian black bears. In the "Interaction Square," visitors can have close encounters with gentle animals like emus (Australian ostriches) and sheep.
Moreover, the zoo frequently hosts various activities, including feeding experiences in the Interaction Square and seasonal events like "Animal Night." No matter when you visit, you can experience different activities throughout the seasons.
