⛩️ Zojoji Temple (増上寺)

Located at the foot of Tokyo Tower, Zōjō-ji (増上寺, Sōgō-zan Kōtō-in Zōjō-ji) is one of the seven main temples of the Jōdo sect (Pure Land Buddhism). It is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan, had great reverence for the secret Buddha "Kuro-Honzon" housed in the temple's Ankokuden, and thus Zōjō-ji is revered as a temple that brings victory and good fortune. Within the temple, there are the "Sanjō" (三解脱門), commonly known as the "Three Gates of Liberation," which consist of "Kūmon" (空門), "Musōmon" (無相門), and "Bugyōmon" (無願門). The purpose of these gates is to awaken from the troubles of life. Additionally, the temple contains the graves of the Tokugawa shogunate, which are designated as important cultural properties. Despite being situated in a bustling urban area, Zōjō-ji offers a spacious garden where one can enjoy a quiet and pleasant time.

Many tourists visit 東京タワー (Tokyo Tower) while also paying their respects at 増上寺 (Zojoji Temple). In spring, one can enjoy the beautiful景色 (scenery) woven together by 増上寺 (Zojoji Temple), 東京タワー (Tokyo Tower), and cherry blossoms. The secret Buddha "黒本尊" (Kurohonzon) is only open to the public on three days each year: January 15, May 15, and September 15.
