⛩️ Kumano Shrine (Meguro Ward, Tokyo)

📝 Introduction

The shrine, revered as the deity of Jiyugaoka, has been deeply loved by the people since ancient times and is also a well-known energy spot.

📖 Details

Kumano Shrine, located in the fashionable district of Jiyugaoka, has been revered as the local deity since ancient times and is deeply respected by the community. During the Kamakura period, the practice of "Kumano Pilgrimage" to the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha) became popular among the common people, and records of Kumano visits were found in the Meguro area. Later, the enshrinement of the deities from the three mountains became the origin of Kumano Shrine. As you walk along the narrow approach to the shrine, you will find a rich greenery of sacred trees such as beech and ginkgo, creating a tranquil atmosphere that makes it hard to believe you are in the city. It is a perfect place to pause and reflect during shopping or strolling. The shrine is famous for its energy related to forming connections and fulfilling wishes, attracting worshippers of all ages. It offers related omikuji (fortune slips) and omamori (amulets). You can also look for the heart-shaped patterns hidden within the vermilion worship hall. Every year, on the first Sunday of September (with the preceding Saturday as the eve festival), a grand festival is held to pray for a bountiful harvest. Several portable shrines parade through the bustling streets of Jiyugaoka, and performances of local folk arts such as "Meguro BAYASHI," which is designated as an intangible cultural asset of Meguro Ward, and Kagura are also held at the shrine.
