🗺️ Cape Erimo

📝 Introduction

You can personally experience the magnificent scenery and strong winds at the southernmost point of Hokkaido.

📖 Details

Located at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, the Hidaka Mountains stretch for 150 kilometers and are known as the backbone of Hokkaido, with Cape Erimo at the end of the range. The area's rich natural beauty is designated as a national scenic spot called "Pirika Noka," a landscape steeped in Ainu stories, legends, prayers, and cultural heritage. The cliffs, standing about 60 meters high, rise dramatically as if jutting out towards the Pacific Ocean, and in front of the cape lies a spectacular reef that extends approximately 2 kilometers. This area is also one of the windiest regions in Japan, where visitors can experience winds of up to 25 meters per second at the "Wind Pavilion" on the cape. From the observation deck, one can fully feel the powerful nature and strong winds, and on clear days, there is a chance to see the harbor seal, which is becoming an endangered species. Nearby, there are two stone monuments dedicated to the famous Japanese enka singers Mori Shinichi and Shimakura Chiyoko, both featuring songs titled "Cape Erimo," as well as a monument inscribed with a poem by the Emperor that is also worth seeing. Additionally, the white lighthouse "Cape Erimo Lighthouse," which is listed among the "50 Selected Lighthouses of Japan," is fully open to the public and is a popular spot for photography.
