📝 Introduction
The Hachiman Shrine, deeply connected to the Japanese era name "Reiwa."
📖 Details
Sakamoto Hachiman Shrine was established in the early 16th century, with Emperor Ōjin as the main deity, serving as the land god and guardian deity of the Sakamoto area, and is highly revered by the public. The shrine gained significant fame due to its deep connection with the era name "Reiwa."
Nearby are the ruins of the Dazaifu government office established during the Nara period, and around the shrine, there is said to be the residence of the Manyō poet "Ōtomo no Tabito," who was assigned to the Dazaifu government office. Ōtomo no Tabito hosted the "Ume Blossom Feast," and the preface of the "32 Poems" he composed describes "In the early spring of the auspicious month, the air is pleasant and the winds are gentle," which was later adopted as the era name "Reiwa."
Within the shrine grounds, there is a stone monument inscribed with "Reiwa" and a monument dedicated to Tabito's poetry. The shrine sells amulets commemorating the era name "Reiwa," as well as amulets modeled after the "Ume Blossom Feast" hosted by Tabito. On the day of the era name change and at the beginning of the following year, long lines formed for purchasing the shrine's goshuin, and many visitors continue to come to worship.
The text on the Reiwa stone monument is carved based on the handwriting of Mr. Shūshin Shigezumi, who held the calligraphy board when the new era name was announced.
