⛩️ Definition of the Western Temple of Tathāgata

The Jōrai Western Temple, established in the 3rd year of the Hōei era (1706), is a Pure Land sect temple. Locally, it is affectionately referred to as "Jōrai-sensei" and is deeply respected by the community. According to legend, Taira no Sadanao, a high-ranking official of the Taira clan, hid in this temple after suffering a great defeat by the Minamoto clan in battle. Later, Sadanao changed his name to Jōrai and lived in seclusion; after his death, he was enshrined here as part of the temple's origin. To protect the image of Amitābha Tathāgata, the defeated Sadanao enshrined it in the temple, which is now the secret Buddha of the main hall. It is said that the temple can grant blessings for good relationships and childbirth, attracting many worshippers each year. The grounds feature a mountain gate and the Kannon of Childbirth, both worth seeing. The five-story pagoda, standing about 30 meters tall, is particularly noteworthy. Nearby, at a matcha tea shop, visitors can enjoy matcha brewed with "Chōmeisui" spring water while gazing at the pagoda. The approach to the temple is lined with snack and dessert shops, making it perfect for a post-visit stroll to explore local delicacies. The famous "Triangle Fried Tofu" is a signature dish of Jōrai, reportedly selling up to 10,000 portions in a single day. Additionally, although the temple is located within Sendai city, it is situated in a mountainous area, making transportation less convenient. Taking a bus from Sendai Station is the simplest option, but services are infrequent.

The solemn five-story pagoda and the mountain gate stand tall at the temple. People pray for blessings to form good relationships and for children. You can explore the town in front of the gate for delicious food.
