Located on "Suichazu no Michi," a street that branches off from the "Old Karuizawa Ginza Street," is the only Catholic church in Karuizawa. This church has long been well-known and has appeared in several literary works, including Yasunari Kawabata's "The Master of Go" and Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's "The Wind Rises."
The church was built in 1935 (Shōwa 10) by the American architect Antonin Raymond, who is known as the father of modern architecture in Japan. Its massive spire and steep triangular roof are particularly striking. The roof design incorporates traditional styles from Raymond's homeland, Czech Republic, making it worth a visit. Inside, the shear truss structure reveals a high ceiling and exposed wood, allowing visitors to experience the warmth of the wood in the spacious interior and enjoy a moment of relaxation. It can be used for weddings, and in the past, artists have held ceremonies here.
