📖 Details
The museum collects and showcases the works of the representative Japanese artist from Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture—Taro Okamoto. At the age of 80, Taro Okamoto donated his works to the city of Kawasaki and built the museum, which opened in 1999. With the concept of an "experiential exhibition space," the museum is filled with various cleverly designed elements that allow visitors to step into Taro Okamoto's world.
The collection includes over 1,800 pieces, featuring not only paintings but also sculptures, photographs, and furniture. The permanent exhibition hall hosts four rotating exhibitions each year, introducing Taro Okamoto's worldview from various perspectives. There are numerous three-dimensional works, including the "Chair that Refuses to be Sat On," which has a seat designed to look like eyes or a mouth, and the "Hand Chair," shaped like a hand, both of which are available for visitors to actually sit on.
The outdoor space features the iconic 30-meter tall tower "Tower of Mother," which is also a must-see piece. Its organic shape perfectly blends with the greenery of the park next to the museum. In the self-service café inside, visitors can enjoy a leisurely moment while gazing out at the lush trees of Ikuta Green Space through the large glass windows.
