📝 Introduction
Introducing the traditional craft of "Kinosaki Barley Straw Weaving," which has been passed down for approximately 300 years.
📖 Details
Kinosaki Barley Straw Craft originated in the Edo period and boasts a proud history of nearly 300 years. Using barley straw as material, the production of paulownia boxes and colored paper is a unique traditional craft of Kinosaki. Its vibrant colors and luxurious sheen have received high praise overseas, and it has been designated as a traditional craft of Hyogo Prefecture and an intangible cultural asset of Toyooka City.
The Kinosaki Barley Straw Craft Museum (城崎麥草細工傳承館) is housed in a white-walled earthen storehouse that perfectly matches the hot spring town. Inside, approximately 40 handmade works by contemporary artists are displayed, along with over 200 precious pieces from the Edo period to the early Showa period. Visitors can not only admire the beautiful works up close but also gain a deeper understanding of the history of barley straw craft.
The museum also offers experience workshops where you can complete a barley straw craft project in 15 to 30 minutes. With careful guidance from instructors, you can weave barley straw into rings, create postcards decorated with colorful straw, and make various items like spinning tops. It’s a great opportunity to make a souvenir of your trip.
