⛩️ Kushida Shrine

📝 Introduction

Dedicated to the "Hakata Gion Yamakasa," the guardian of the Hakata region, "Kushida-sama."

📖 Details

Kushida Shrine is said to have been established during the Nara period and serves as the guardian deity of the Hakata region, affectionately referred to as "Kushida-sensei" by the local people. Every July, the shrine hosts the "Hakata Gion Yamakasa," which announces the arrival of summer in Hakata. Throughout the year, except for June, visitors can see the magnificent and splendid "Kazari Yamakasa" at the shrine. The deities enshrined here include Ōhata no Kami (Kushida Shrine), Amaterasu Ōmikami (Ōmiya Shrine), and Susanoo no Mikoto (Gion Shrine). It is said that the shrine was invited from the Kushida Shrine in Ise Matsusaka. In the 15th year of Tenshō (1587), Toyotomi Hideyoshi donated and constructed the current shrine building while revitalizing Hakata. After worshiping, visitors can head to the legendary "Reisen Tsuruzui," a spring said to grant longevity. This is a popular energy spot within the shrine. Additionally, there is the "Hakata Historical Museum" where one can view valuable historical documents of Hakata, including the seal documents left by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and ancient masks from the Muromachi period's Matsubayashi. At the "Kushida Chaya" located behind the shrine, visitors can also enjoy the famous "Kushida Grilled Mochi." The mochi has a soft, sweet filling wrapped in a crispy outer layer, and the aroma of the freshly grilled mochi is particularly enticing.
