⛩️ Mito Toshogu Shrine

📝 Introduction

A historic shrine that is deeply loved by the locals and is nicknamed "Mr. Kengen of Mito."

📖 Details

In the 7th year of Genna (1621), Tokugawa Yorifusa, the first lord of the Mito Domain, built a shrine to worship his father, Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the 11th year of Showa (1936), Yorifusa was also enshrined here, and now two deities are worshipped. The design of the karamon (唐門) and the shrine hall is luxurious and splendid, complementing the legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified the realm. The intricate details and magnificent decorations are worth appreciating closely. The inner area preserves several precious cultural properties, including the "copper lantern" donated by Yorifusa, the "Tokoyasan Clock" ordered to be built by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, who is famous for Mito Komon, and the "Anshin Car," a war chariot designed by Tokugawa Nariaki. Due to Tokugawa Ieyasu's success in unifying the country, he is believed to bless commercial prosperity and career success. The Tokugawa family is also regarded as the deity who transformed the chaotic Warring States period into a peaceful era, attracting many people who pray for good relationships. The Tokugawa family promoted the improvement of the Tōkaidō road, and thus, Mito Tōshōgū frequently holds rituals praying for traffic safety and construction safety.
