🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
Built during the Kamakura period, this shrine is famous for enshrining the "Goryōshin" (Five Dragon Gods).
📖 Details
The Tanashi Shrine, located in Nishitokyo City, dates back to the Kamakura period when it was originally situated about 1 kilometer away at Miyama in Kitayato. Known as "Jōden Gongen," it was relocated to its current site in the 17th century. Later, in 1872, the shrine was renamed "Tanashi Shrine." In 1910, five smaller shrines within the town were merged here, and in 1949, the deity Ōtori no Ōkami, which was enshrined from the Ōtori Shrine in Abeno, Osaka, has been worshipped to this day.
The main deities are Kunitokotachi no Mikoto, Kunitokubekun no Mikoto, and Ōkuninushi no Mikoto, with Kunitokotachi no Mikoto and Kunitokubekun no Mikoto being worshipped since the shrine's establishment. These two deities are known for their dominion over the wind. Currently, based on the Five Elements philosophy, "Five Dragon Gods" are enshrined, with a golden dragon placed in the main hall, and black, white, red, and blue dragons distributed throughout the shrine grounds.
The year begins with the "Saitan-sai" on New Year's Day, followed by numerous festivals and local traditional activities throughout the year. On September 19 each year, the Dragon God Festival is held to honor the main hall (Golden Dragon God) and the four Dragon God shrines, with special visits to the main hall and worship hall taking place every November.
The main hall is renowned for being the finest work crafted by the famous carpenter Shimamura Toshitake, one of the best in Edo, and has been designated as a tangible cultural property by Tokyo Metropolis. Additionally, in 2018, the main hall and worship hall were selected as "Important Historical Buildings of Special Scenic Value" by Tokyo Metropolis.
