📝 Introduction
Okajō is praised as an impregnable fortress, and it still retains several stone walls to this day.
📖 Details
The ruins of Okajō, said to have been built in 1185 to welcome the samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune into the city during the Heian period, are located on a rocky hill formed by volcanic debris from Mount Aso at an elevation of 325 meters. Due to its geographical advantages of steep cliffs and impressive stone walls, it is renowned as an impregnable fortress. After the castle was abandoned, the buildings within were dismantled, but the stone walls remain to this day, showcasing the grandeur of the former castle. Notably, the magnificent and towering stone walls connecting the main enclosure San-no-Maru to Ni-no-Maru are worth seeing.
Surrounded by majestic nature, the changing seasons bring different charms to the Okajō ruins. In winter, the walls are covered with a soft blanket of white snow, while in spring, the castle grounds are adorned with blooming cherry blossoms. Every April, the "Gōjō Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, featuring a parade of samurai and armored warriors, making the event lively and grand.
The castle grounds are equipped with walking paths, with the shortest route taking about 40 minutes and a leisurely stroll taking around 120 minutes. Along the way, one can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Aso and the Kujū mountain range.
