🗺️ Rokuyosan Hongwanji (Nishi Hongwanji)
🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
The head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji sect, designated as a "World Cultural Heritage."
📖 Details
The Hongwanji branch of Jodo Shinshu, affectionately known as "Gonishi-sensei," is beloved by the public. After the passing of the founder of Jodo Shinshu, Shinran Shonin, his daughter, Kakushin-ni, built a temple to enshrine his remains and statue, which became the origin of Hongwanji. In 1591, with the support of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it was relocated to its current site.
The expansive Ryukoku-san Hongwanji, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers approximately 30,000 tsubo and houses numerous national treasures and important cultural properties, including the Goeido, Amida Hall, and the Hōun-kyaku, which is known as one of the "Three Famous Pavilions of Kyoto" alongside Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji (the Hōun-kyaku is not open to the public). It also includes the oldest existing Noh stage, the Kita Noh stage (not open to the public). During special visits, areas that are usually not open to the public, such as the Shiroshoin, the Tokkyo Garden, and the Hōun-kyaku, can be accessed.
Additionally, there are several hidden highlights, including a giant ginkgo tree that is about 400 years old, the corridors of the Goeido and Amida Hall adorned with inlaid wood designs of plants and animals, and the reflection of the Amida Hall on the surface of the water at the Chōzuya (purification fountain). Participating in a guided tour led by monks can provide a deeper understanding of Nishi Hongwanji.
