📝 Introduction

A magnificent shrine located at the foothills on the north side of Jinhua Mountain.

📖 Details

Located at the foot of Mount Kinka in Gifu, facing the nearby Nagara River, Gifu Gokoku Shrine is a renowned energy spot. It enshrines the spirits of 37,800 individuals from Gifu, Chuno, and Tono regions who sacrificed their lives from the Boshin War to the Greater East Asia War. Established in 1940, it has been deeply revered by many people both within and outside the prefecture for over 80 years. Surrounded by rich natural forests, it is one of the top natural attractions in Gifu Prefecture. Due to its beautiful scenery, it is also a popular venue for solemn and traditional Shinto weddings. The most famous feature of the grounds is the "Ugai Cherry Blossom," a giant variety known as Bihankanzakura (Edo Bihankanzakura), which is over 150 years old and is the earliest blooming cherry tree in Gifu City. The local community uses the number of blossoms it produces each year to predict the harvest of sweetfish caught by cormorants, which is why it is commonly referred to as "Ugai Cherry Blossom." The best time to enjoy the blossoms varies each year, typically around mid to late March, allowing visitors to experience the early breath of spring.
