About Sandanbeki
Witness the stunning scene where the Kuroshio Current collides with the steep cliffs.
Details
Sandanbeki is a cliff approximately 50 meters high and extending about 2 kilometers. Long ago, it served as a lookout point for fishermen to watch over passing boats and search for schools of fish, also known as "Mitan." The pronunciation of "Mitan" in Japanese is the same as "Sandan," and over time it evolved into "Sandanbeki." Here, one can witness the spectacular scene of the Kuroshio Current violently crashing against the rocks, creating towering waves.
In April 2016, Sandanbeki was designated as a "Lover's Sanctuary" in Wakayama Prefecture. Near the observation deck, there is a heart-shaped monument and a pink mailbox, attracting many couples who come to pay homage.
Below Sandanbeki, there is the "Sandanbeki Cave," which can be visited. According to legend, this cave was a hiding place for the Kumano navy, which aided the Genji during the Genpei War, making it a historical site that still carries the scent of the war's smoke.
Additionally, in front of the Sandanbeki Cave, there is a "Sandanbeki Ashiyu" where visitors can enjoy foot baths.
