The ruins of Katsuren Castle, located on the hills of Katsuren Peninsula in central Okinawa, were the residence of Amawari, who brought prosperity to Katsuren through overseas trade in the 15th century. In 2000, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Katsuren Castle, built using natural cliffs, is renowned as an impregnable fortress, with beautifully curved walls. It is also a famous scenic spot in Okinawa, offering a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape from its elevated terraces. From the north side, one can gaze upon the northern mountains surrounding Kin Bay and the islands of Uruma City, while the south side provides distant views of Chinen Peninsula, Kudaka Island, and Nakagusuku Castle ruins. At the foot of the castle ruins, "Amawari Park" was opened in 2021. This facility introduces the history and culture of Katsuren Castle and Uruma City, showcasing artifacts excavated from Katsuren Castle, as well as displays presented through photos and videos. Additionally, on weekends and national holidays, there are dynamic performances that tell the story of Amawari.
