⛩️ Gero Onsen Iou Rinsen Onsen Temple

📝 Introduction

The temple, with its deep connection to the source of Gero Onsen, overlooks the city from a high vantage point, offering a view of the autumn foliage.

📖 Details

Onsen-ji Temple is located in Gero Onsen and has a history of 350 years since its establishment in the 11th year of the Kanbun era (1671). It is situated on the slopes of Nakane Mountain, also known as "Gero Fuji." After climbing 173 steps, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Hida mountains and the entire hot spring town. Gero Onsen, which has existed since the Heian period, once dried up. The Medicine Buddha, in the form of a white heron, guided the villagers to a new source of hot spring water, and later, the Medicine Buddha was enshrined as the main deity. At the foot of the statue of the Medicine Buddha in front of the main hall, a sacred spring from Gero Onsen emerges. The temple houses precious collections, including "Yubun," which records the history of Gero Onsen, and a statue of Buddha created by the Edo period monk Enku. The area around the temple has 80 maple trees, making it a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves. During the best time for leaf viewing in mid-November, nighttime illuminations are held, allowing visitors to stroll freely in a dreamy atmosphere. If it gets cold, visitors can soak their feet in the foot baths along the hot spring street or enjoy the "Maple Foot Bath" (available only during the maple season) within the temple to warm up.
