⛩️ Uesugi Shrine
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
A shrine dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin, who was renowned throughout the world during the Warring States period.
📖 Details
Uesugi Shrine is located within "Matsugasaki Park," which is situated on the site of the old Yonezawa Castle. At the end of the moat, where koi fish swim leisurely, flags inscribed with the characters "Bi" and "Ryuu" flutter in the breeze. The grand and solemn Ryuzō-style shrine stands in the center of the expansive grounds. Since its establishment in the 4th year of the Meiji era (1871), many visitors have come to pay their respects, praying for victory and the fulfillment of their wishes.
The main deity enshrined here is Uesugi Kenshin, a renowned warlord from the Echigo region (now Niigata Prefecture). After Kenshin's death, his adopted son Uesugi Kagekatsu succeeded him, establishing his base in Aizu and serving as one of the Five Elders of the Toyotomi clan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Later, after the defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara against the Tokugawa clan, the Yonezawa domain was reduced to 300,000 koku, and subsequently, Kenshin was enshrined in this place.
Within the grounds, there is the Matsugasaki Shrine, which enshrines Uesugi Yozan, known for his famous saying "Everything will be accomplished as long as it is the right way." There are also notable attractions such as the treasure hall "Keishoden," which displays armor, swords, clothing, ancient texts, and many cultural properties related to the Uesugi family.
