🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
It is a shrine affectionately nicknamed "Shinsha-sensei," deeply loved by the local people of Shonai.
📖 Details
Shonai Shrine is located within Tsuruoka Park, which is lined with beautiful cherry trees along the moat. It was built in the 10th year of the Meiji era (1877) by the people of Shonai in memory of their former feudal lord, on the site of the old main keep of Tsuruoka Castle. The shrine enshrines four generations of feudal lords from the Shonai domain as the main deities and is affectionately known as "Jinja-sensei," earning deep respect from the local community.
In recent years, the shrine's "Hanate water" has become a popular topic of interest. The temizuya (water purification basin) is adorned with seasonal flowers, providing a healing sight just by looking at it. There is also a "Mizu-gusuri" (water fortune) where the fortunes drawn are displayed on the water, making it a fun way to try divination while visiting.
Every year from late June to early August, the famous "Enmusubi Tanabata Matsuri" is held. During this event, there are nighttime illuminations and limited-time goshuin (shrine stamps) available. The shrine features several photo spots, such as the "Hydrangea Fortune" and "Hydrangea Photo Spot," making it highly recommended to wear a yukata and take pictures here.
Next to the main hall of Shonai Shrine, there is a treasure hall displaying precious items such as weapons and artistic crafts from the former Sakai clan.
