Takeda Shingen was a military commander who ruled the province of Kai (now Yamanashi Prefecture) during the Sengoku period (1467โ1615). Due to his overwhelming strength, he was known as the "Tiger of Kai." The Takeda army, led by him and primarily composed of cavalry, was regarded as the strongest force of the Sengoku era. The "Battles of Kawanakajima" against his arch-rival Uesugi Kenshin occurred five times and are among the most famous battles of the Warring States period. Based in Kai Province, he conquered Shinano and Suruga, engaging in fierce battles with Uesugi Kenshin and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Although he was in opposition to Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga, he still initiated the Western Campaign aimed at unifying the realm, but he fell ill and passed away during the journey, leaving his ambitions unfulfilled.
