📖 Details
Unchoji Temple is a Soto Zen temple located on the westernmost side of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. Established in 1624, the main hall is a historic building constructed during the Edo period. It is said that the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha enshrined here was crafted by a Buddhist sculptor from Osaka.
The most eye-catching feature of the temple is the abundance of hydrangeas that thrive within its grounds. After the former abbot, Ko Nakamura, planted the first hydrangea here, over 15 years have passed, and now there are more than 2,000 plants! During the peak blooming season, the area is covered in shades of blue, creating a breathtaking scene that feels like stepping into another world, deeply moving the visiting worshippers.
Additionally, behind the blooming hydrangeas, one can see the port town of Kitauwa and the sea of Oga. This unique beauty has made Unchoji Temple one of the top hydrangea viewing spots in all of Japan.
The hydrangea blooming season typically lasts from early June to mid-July, with late June being the peak bloom period. Visitors can enjoy the flowers during the day, and the hydrangeas illuminated by the evening sun also have a special charm, making them appealing to view at any time.
