🗺️ The Abyss of Infancy

📝 Introduction

Gazing at the turbulent waves and Mount Fuji.

📖 Details

Waka-chan's Abyss is located on the southwestern side of Enoshima and was formed by uplift phenomena during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, resulting in a marine erosion terrace. The name Waka-chan's Abyss originates from a young monk named Shirogiku who trained at the Jōmyō-in temple of Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū in Kamakura. It is said that a high monk named Jikyū from Kenchō-ji fell in love at first sight with Shirogiku when he visited Enoshima to pay his respects, and unable to achieve his desired outcome in love, Shirogiku tragically took her own life by drowning. The terrace, shaped by years of erosion from the waves, along with its magnificent sea view, has been selected as one of the "50 Scenic Spots of Kanagawa." The sunset view is particularly enchanting. On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen distinctly, creating a breathtaking scene with the crashing waves against the eroded terrace, captivating many domestic and international tourists with its stunning scenery and outdoor activities. Waka-chan's Abyss is also a renowned rock fishing spot, where anglers can catch various seasonal fish, including Japanese seabass, young amberjack, bonito, and black sea bream.
