⛩️ Tōzan Kannon-ji Temple

📝 Introduction

A famous temple in the mountains known for its miraculous blessings and beautiful autumn leaves.

📖 Details

Tonsan Kankō Onji Temple is a distinguished head temple of the Kōyasan Shingon sect, and along with the sub-temple Tenno-in, it is the 16th sacred site of the Chikuzen Sasaguri 88 Pilgrimage. It has been widely revered by the public since ancient times under the nickname "Tonsan Daijin." This temple is known for its efficacy in granting wishes and dispelling disasters, attracting over one million visitors each year. The expansive grounds are centered around the main hall that enshrines the Thousand-Handed Thousand-Eyed Kannon (観世音菩薩), located at an altitude of 450 meters. The temple offers a rich and colorful natural landscape throughout the four seasons, featuring cherry blossoms, rhododendrons, and Japanese magnolias in spring; hydrangeas and fresh greenery in summer; vibrant autumn leaves; and picturesque snow scenes in winter. The most remarkable sight is the autumn foliage, particularly the spectacular view of the Iroha maple trees around Tenno-in turning red simultaneously. The area surrounding the Kannon Hall, adorned with a thousand azaleas displaying fiery red leaves, is also breathtaking. Looking out from the hall, the scenery resembles a beautiful painting framed in nature. Other trees such as mountain maples, mountain cherries, wild lacquer trees, and sweetgums also display stunning color changes. During the Momiji Matsuri (Autumn Leaves Festival) from October 28 to November 23 each year, a flea market called "Kannon-ichi" is held, drawing numerous worshippers.

⭐ Highlights

Every year, over a million visitors come to worship. Inside the grounds, various plants and flowers compete for beauty throughout the four seasons. The sight of a thousand Iroha maple trees and the red leaves of the azaleas is truly spectacular.
