Yamaga Onsen is one of the most historic hot spring areas in Kumamoto. According to legend, it was discovered by Lord Ueno Chikuharu, who was defeated in the Hōgen Rebellion, after he saw an injured deer soaking in the hot springs to heal its wounds. Yamaga Onsen has a total of 23 hot spring facilities scattered throughout the area. It is said that the hot springs here are effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and more. Yamaga is located at a strategic point along the Buzen Highway between Kumamoto and Kokura, and it has prospered as a hot spring post town since the Edo period. Historical buildings from the Tenpo era, such as the Kojiya, have been preserved to this day, along with a theater designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and a public bathhouse restored to its original Meiji period appearance, allowing visitors to stroll through the nostalgic streets.
