🗺️ Aoshimaura Catholic Church

About 55 kilometers west of Sasebo lies "Nakanoshima," an island with a beautiful ria coastline. Since the 16th century, Christianity has taken root here, and to this day, there are several historical sites on the island. There are many churches on the island, the most well-known of which is the "Aoshinoura Catholic Church." This sturdy brick building stands on a hill, gently caressed by the cool sea breeze, and it is said that at the time, the parishioners actively participated in the labor by carrying bricks on their backs. The architectural design was created by the local architect Tetsukawa Yoshiyuki. The overall appearance is harmonious, and the church features a high ceiling created with curved beams and columns, allowing sunlight to filter through the stained glass. This building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is now in its third generation and celebrated its centenary in 2010. During Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the church is adorned with splendid colorful lights, creating a winter scene that attracts many visitors.
