🗺️ Genbudo Park
🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
A stunning work of art crafted by nature itself, with an impressive scale.
📖 Details
Within Genbudo Park, there are several caves composed of basalt, featuring orderly and regular cracks known as "columnar joints." These were formed approximately 1.6 million years ago when lava flowed during volcanic activity and solidified upon cooling. The park has walking paths and was reopened in 2022 after renovations. The surrounding area is part of the San'in Kaigan National Park, which holds significant geological value as part of the "San'in Kaigan Geopark," and is recognized as a Global Geopark.
The park contains five caves, including the nationally designated natural monuments Genbudo and Seiryu-do. The easily extractable basalt was heavily mined in the past, leaving behind these caves. Visitors can closely observe the unique shapes of each cave, featuring columnar joints nearly 15 meters long and curved rock formations.
This area is also famous for hydrangeas, with beautiful blooms visible during the flowering season from June to early July each year. Near the park entrance, the Genbudo Museum showcases a rich collection of rocks, minerals, fossils, and more, and includes a shop worth visiting.
