📖 Details

Located at the westernmost point of Wakkanai, the Noshappu Aquarium is the northernmost aquarium in Japan. It primarily houses and displays about 1,300 creatures of approximately 120 species, including fish and seals that live in the cold waters of the North Sea. The most eye-catching exhibit is the giant migratory tank with a water volume of 90 tons, where visitors can see the "dream fish" Iwashi, as well as various species from northern waters such as flatfish and cod. The "Touch Pool," where you can personally touch starfish and crabs, and the display of the "ice floe angel," the naked sea butterfly, are also very popular. During the summer, the "Seal and Penguin Feeding Time" features agile spotted seals performing with balls and other objects, attracting many visitors each year. The aquarium, along with the nearby "Wakkanai City Youth Science Museum," is collectively known as "Wakkarium (わっかりうむ)." By paying a combined entrance fee, visitors can access the exhibits of the science museum and all other facilities, including the planetarium. Additionally, if you want to enjoy the famous sunset views of Noshappu, don't forget to check the sunset times posted on the aquarium's bulletin board.
