📖 Details
The Manzan Shrine is located on Mount Manzan in the northern part of Oga and has thrived as a sacred site of mountain worship since ancient times. The shrine is situated on the mountainside of Manzan, surrounded by Akita cedars, exuding a solemn atmosphere. It is said that the Manzan Shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Keikō (71–130 AD). Since the Heian period, the shrine has flourished as a sacred site of Shugendō under the protection of successive rulers.
The main hall of the shrine is located at the summit of Mount Manzan, which stands at an elevation of 567 meters, and is enshrined as a guardian deity for national peace, long-lasting military success, abundant harvests, and maritime safety. The main hall, rebuilt in 2007, features a two-story structure, offering magnificent views from the second floor. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk from the worship hall to the main hall, so it is recommended to wear comfortable walking attire.
Additionally, the Manzan Shrine is also famous for its connection to the Namahage culture. Every year, on the second Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of February, the shrine holds the "Namahage Fire Festival." Under the blazing torches within the shrine grounds, the powerful and dynamic Namahage dance performance takes place, attracting numerous visitors.
