📖 Details

Haseyama Hontoji is a major temple of the Nichiren sect, a school of Japanese Buddhism. It was established in the 3rd year of Kenji (1277) within the residence of the Hiraga family, founded by Nichiren. Hontoji is also the birthplace of his disciple Nissho, and there is a well nearby called "Nissho Bosatsu Birth Water." It is said to be very effective for wishes related to good fortune, safe delivery, child-rearing, and academic success, and is greatly revered by the local community. The temple grounds are home to a variety of trees and flowers, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the year. In particular, every June, around ten varieties with a total of over 10,000 hydrangeas bloom in the temple, earning it the nickname "Hydrangea Temple."

⭐ Highlights

Every June, over 10,000 hydrangeas and more than 5,000 iris flowers bloom in the temple. By autumn, approximately 1,500 maple trees adorn the ancient temple with beautiful shades of red and yellow. The site features historical structures, including a distinctive five-story pagoda (五重塔).
