⛩️ Uji Shrine

📝 Introduction

Sacred energy sites that have been highly revered since ancient times.

📖 Details

The ancient shrine registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under "Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto." It is said to have been built in the 3rd year of the Kōhei era (1060) and serves as the guardian shrine of the Byodoin Temple in Uji, which was constructed in the 1st year of the Tenki era (1053). As the guardian deity of the Uji land, it has been widely worshipped by both commoners and nobles, and it remains a center of faith for the local community to this day. The main hall was built in the late Heian period and is said to be the oldest existing shrine architecture in Japan. This structure, built over a thousand years ago, still conveys the atmosphere of its time with its ancient appearance. The worship hall, constructed in the 3rd year of the Kenpo era (1215) during the Kamakura period, is built in the architectural style of the sleeping quarters of nobles and samurai. It is very rare and precious to have a worship hall modeled after residential buildings for the enshrinement of deities. Both the main hall and the worship hall have been designated as national treasures. The main deities enshrined are "Emperor Ōjin," "Emperor Nintoku," and "Tōdō Wakō." It is said that they can bless individuals with academic success and passing exams.
