⛩️ Kahiru Shrine
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
A shrine dedicated to the frog god whose name sounds like "Gero," which can bring various blessings.
📖 Details
Kahiru Shrine was established in 2010 and is located on Yumachi Street in Gero Onsen. The pronunciation of Gero Onsen, "GERO," is a homophone for the sound of a frog croaking, "GERO-GERO," making it quite unique.
It enshrines "Kahiru Daimyōjin." The "Kuchigane-bako" (money pouch) symbolizes the accumulation of wealth, and the pronunciation of "kaeru" (frog) represents returning. Therefore, it is believed to provide blessings for safe travels and transportation. When you throw in an offering at the statue of Kahiru Daimyōjin in the center of the shrine, you will hear a broadcast thanking you.
On the left side of the stone statue, there is a wooden ema (votive tablet) rack, and on the right side, there is a fortune slip rack. You might want to write your wishes on an ema (400 yen each) and hang it up, or try your luck by drawing a fortune slip (100 yen each).
Throughout the shrine grounds, you can see clever designs featuring frogs, such as the window frames of stone lanterns and the temizuya (water purification basin). Be sure to look for other frog patterns as well. There is also a stone monument marking the old site of the inn where Inō Tadataka stayed; he traveled all over Japan to conduct measurements and ultimately completed the map of Japan.
