🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
Built by Prince Shōtoku, the "Shitenno-ji style temple layout," one of Japan's oldest architectural styles, is a must-see.
📖 Details
Shitennoji Temple was built by Prince Shotoku, the "founder of Japanese Buddhism," in 593. After entering the Heian period, people's reverence transformed into faith, making Shitennoji a sacred site of worship for Prince Shotoku, which continues to be deeply respected today as the head temple of the Nara sect.
The layout of the temple complex at Shitennoji is known as the "Shitennoji-style temple layout," and it is one of the oldest architectural styles in Japan. The central gate, five-story pagoda, main hall, and lecture hall are arranged in a straight line from south to north, surrounded by cloisters. This layout has also appeared in China and the Korean Peninsula, highlighting the connections between ancient Japan and the continent. Despite suffering significant damage from multiple disasters and wars, it has been rebuilt numerous times through the efforts of the local community.
The five-story pagoda, a symbolic structure of Shitennoji, was vowed by Prince Shotoku to save the six realms (hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans, and heavenly beings). Inside the heart pillar of the pagoda's foundation, six Buddhist relics and six strands of his own hair were placed, hence it is also called the "Six Realms Saving Pagoda." The interior of the building is now open for visitors, and from the top level, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city of Osaka.
In addition to the main temple complex, there are many attractions worth visiting, including the "Treasure Hall," which houses precious national treasures and important cultural properties, and the "Paradise Garden," a pond-style strolling garden that spans 10,000 square meters. Furthermore, a grand master meeting is held on the 21st of each month, followed by a Prince Shotoku festival on the 22nd. On the 22nd, a market is held, and during the festival period, around 300 vendors set up stalls within the temple grounds, creating a lively atmosphere.
