📝 Introduction

A must-visit spot for tourists in Tokyo! The oldest temple in Tokyo, with a history of over 1300 years.

📖 Details

Senso-ji Temple is a famous tourist attraction representing Tokyo, with annual visitors exceeding 30 million. As the oldest temple in Tokyo, it hosts various traditional cultural events each year, such as "Hatsumode" and "Setsubun," attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists. The "Kaminarimon" (Thunder Gate), a symbol of Senso-ji, is marked by a massive red lantern, flanked by statues of the "Raijin" (Thunder God) and "Fūjin" (Wind God). The "Nakamise-dōri" shopping street, leading from the Thunder Gate to the main hall, stretches for 250 meters and is lined with many shops selling various handicrafts, Japanese snacks, unique souvenirs, and traditional foods. In front of the main hall, there is an incense burner; it is said that if you touch the smoke to the areas of your body that are not feeling well, it can aid in healing. Thus, many worshippers fan the smoke towards their bodies to pray for health and relief from misfortune.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Please provide information regarding accessible facilities.

A: On the left side of the main hall, there is an elevator. Additionally, there are multi-functional restrooms located on the right side of the treasure door and at the back of the main hall. These facilities are equipped with handrails designed for wheelchair users, as well as changing tables and baby seats.

Q: I've heard that it's impossible to see the true Buddha statue in person, is that true?

A: Due to the fact that both the main deity (本尊) and the standing deity before the main deity (御前立本尊) are secret Buddhas, they cannot be seen and worshipped by everyone. However, you can view the statue of the standing deity before the main deity (御前立本尊) at 2 PM on December 13th each year (only once a year).

Q: I've heard that there are many "evil" oracle poems, is that true?

A: It is often said that "there are many 'bad' fortunes in the omikuji of Senso-ji," but this is actually because Senso-ji retains the style of ancient omikuji. Moreover, even those who draw a bad fortune should not be overly fearful; as long as they live their lives seriously and honestly, the bad fortune can turn into good fortune.
