Nikkō Tōshō-gū is a shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shōgun of the Edo period. As a key attraction of the World Heritage Site "Shrines and Temples of Nikkō," visitors can admire approximately 55 splendid buildings, including 8 National Treasures and 34 Important Cultural Properties. The expansive grounds boast numerous fascinating sights.
Skilled artisans summoned from across Japan crafted the buildings, applying vibrant colors and intricate decorative carvings on pillars and other areas. The five-story pagoda, standing about 36 meters tall, is renowned for its outstanding earthquake-resistant design. It is said that the earthquake-resistant structure of the Tōshō-gū five-story pagoda inspired the seismic design of the Tokyo Skytree.
Nikkō Tōshō-gū features many captivating highlights, such as the famous three monkeys carved in the "Kanchō-sha" (神厩舎), known for their expressions "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil." Additionally, the "Yōmeimon" (陽明門) is celebrated for its intricate, brightly colored carvings, making it so captivating that one could stare at it all day without growing tired, earning it the nickname "Sunset Gate." As one of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikkō," Nikkō Tōshō-gū has been registered as a World Heritage Site.
