About Samurai Stone

It is said that a samurai once rested here, overlooking the breathtaking giant rock.

Details

A massive rock located next to Samihama Town in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture. You can walk on the rock and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. The natural stone blocks that form the raised coastal erosion platform were created about 130 million years ago during the early Cretaceous period and are made of granite. The Sanriku region has historically faced several tsunami attacks. In the 19th year of the Keicho era (1614), coastal fishing villages were devastated by massive waves, with destroyed homes stretching up to 39 kilometers. At that time, the lord of the southern domain, Toshinao, visited the area to offer condolences, and it is said that he rested on this rock, which is why it is called "Samishi Stone." The surface of the rock has depressions resembling footprints, which are said to be the marks left by Yoshitsune and others as they fled northward. Samishi Stone is located along the "Tago no Ki Trail" leading to Tago Wood Fishing Port. Along the way, you can see red pines and oak trees, and during certain seasons, you can also find sunlit wood lilies and beach lilies. In winter, when the leaves have fallen, you can clearly see the ocean, making it a suitable walking path throughout the four seasons.
