🗺️ Sannai-Maruyama Site

📝 Introduction

The Jomon period village ruins have now been registered as a World Heritage site.

📖 Details

The Sannai-Maruyama Site is a large-scale village archaeological site that was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. The site was discovered during a preliminary investigation conducted by Aomori Prefecture in 1992 while planning the construction of a prefectural baseball stadium. During the excavation, a large number of pit dwellings from the early to mid-Jomon period (approximately 5900 to 4200 years ago), elevated structures (both including large sites), graves, garbage dumps, and roads were found, providing important information for understanding the overall condition of the village and the natural environment at that time. In addition, a significant amount of pottery, jade from other regions, and artifacts such as cultivated chestnuts were unearthed, which changed previous perceptions of Jomon culture. After protective construction work, the Sannai-Maruyama Site was opened to the public. On both sides of the site are restored large elevated structures (with six pillars), large pit dwellings, and typical pit houses, allowing visitors to enter the interior of the large pit dwelling for a tour. The "Jomon Time Museum," serving as a guide facility, displays unearthed pottery and clay figurines, creating a spectacular scene. Additionally, visitors can participate in experiential activities in the workshop, such as learning to make clay figurines and amber pendants.
