A temple famous for the Ako Roshi of the historical drama "Chushingura."

📖 Details

Sengaku-ji is a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. It is the burial site of the 47 samurai known as the Akō gishi, who are featured in the famous historical drama "Chūshingura," along with their lord, Asano Naganori. The temple houses the Akō Gishi Memorial Hall, which contains precious artifacts related to the Akō gishi. Notably, there is a magnificent statue of the central figure of "Chūshingura," Ōishi Kuranosuke Yoshio. To commemorate the Akō gishi, the temple holds the Akō Gishi Festival every year. The highlight of the festival is a parade of people dressed as the samurai, known as the "Gishi Gyo-retsu." The main gate in front of the main hall is quite distinctive, featuring a rare two-story architectural style.
