📝 Introduction
The three shrines of the sacred mountain, which have nurtured diverse beliefs since ancient times, are rooted in the tradition of Shugendō.
📖 Details
Dewa Sanzan is a representative site of mountain worship and Shugendō in the Tohoku region, collectively referring to the three mountains: Haguro-san, symbolizing the present; Gassan, symbolizing the past; and Yudono-san, symbolizing the future. With a long history of over 1430 years, it has nurtured various beliefs and is one of Japan's foremost sacred places, still deeply revered by the public today.
At the summit of Haguro-san, the Sanjin Gosaiden enshrines the three deities of the Dewa Sanzan. This hall was rebuilt in the first year of the Bunsei era (1818) and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, being the largest thatched-roof building in the country. Additionally, at the foot of Haguro-san along the approach, there stands the national treasure "Five-Story Pagoda," which features a thatched roof and five sections. It is said that this 29-meter tall pagoda was rebuilt in the first year of the Bunka era (1372) and is the oldest pagoda in the Tohoku region. Its elegant form, standing among the cedar trees, captivates visiting tourists. The "Bell Tower and Kenji Great Bell" on the east side of Kagami Pond was rebuilt in the fourth year of the Genna era (1618) and is also listed as an Important Cultural Property.
From the Zuishinmon gate at the foot of Haguro-san, it takes about 90 minutes to walk up the stone steps to the Sanjin Gosaiden. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking when visiting.
