⛩️ Dojō Shrine
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
Exuding a magnificent Chinese atmosphere, worship at the three major Confucian temples in Japan, the deities of knowledge.
📖 Details
The Dōkū Shrine was built in the 5th year of the Hōei era (1708) by Dōkū Shōbun, the 4th lord of the Dōkū clan, who valued Confucianism. The shrine enshrines Confucius, the ancestor of Confucianism and a Chinese sage, making it the oldest Confucian temple in Japan and one of the three major Confucian temples in the country. It is widely revered as the god of learning, attracting a steady stream of visitors during exam seasons. The temple features red lacquered sculptures of mythical creatures like the kirin and phoenix, exuding a magnificent atmosphere.
Every April and October, the "Spring Shikai" ceremony is held to express gratitude to Confucius and his disciples. Accompanied by the sounds of gagaku (Japanese classical music), priests dressed in Ming dynasty attire offer food and sweet sake, while performing on waist drums or yangqin. There are also performances of the "Shikai Dance." Additionally, during the festival, visitors can view the statue of Confucius and the dragon paintings on the ceiling, which are usually not open to the public. This festival, which has continued for over three hundred years since its establishment, is an important intangible folk cultural asset of Saga Prefecture.
With prior reservation, there are volunteer guides available to explain the history to visitors.
