⛩️ Hakusan Shrine (Nagano, Okuwa Village)
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
The ancient shrine, built during the late Kamakura period, is the oldest shrine building in Nagano Prefecture.
📖 Details
The Hakusan Shrine, located in Ōkawa Village, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture, was established in the late Kamakura period, specifically in the 4th year of Genkō (1334). The main shrine is the Hakusan Hime Shrine in Ishikawa Prefecture, and it is one of over 2,700 Hakusan shrines across the country.
Passing through the torii gate and walking up the long stone steps for about five minutes, you will be greeted by a pair of cute komainu (guardian lion-dogs) donated by local residents in the 11th year of Meiji (1878). Within the covered stone walls, there are four main shrines representing mountain worship: Hakusan Shrine, Kumano Shrine, Izu Shrine, and Zao Shrine. Each shrine retains its original appearance from the time of its establishment, featuring architectural techniques from the Kamakura period such as the hiyokubuki (cypress bark) roof and the mise-dana (display shelf) style. The shrines are well-preserved and have not undergone renovations in later years, making them the oldest and most precious shrine buildings still existing in Nagano Prefecture, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The surrounding area is filled with many natural sugi (Japanese cedar) and giant hinoki (Japanese cypress), exuding a solemn atmosphere akin to a sacred realm, allowing for leisurely walks.
