📖 Details

Located in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, "Kehi no Matsubara" is ranked alongside "Miho no Matsubara" in Shizuoka Prefecture and "Niji no Matsubara" in Saga Prefecture as one of the 'Three Great Pine Groves of Japan.' This pine grove stretches approximately 1 kilometer in length, covering a total area of 34 hectares, and is home to around 17,000 red pines and black pines thriving in abundance. The striking contrast between the white sandy beach and the deep blue sea attracts countless visitors who linger and enjoy the scenery. The ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige from the Edo period depicted this beautiful landscape in his work "Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces," featuring "Echizen Tsuruga Kehi no Matsubara." In 1934, this pine grove was designated as a national scenic spot by the Japanese government. In summer, it becomes a popular seaside resort, drawing many people looking to escape the heat and creating a lively atmosphere; in winter, it is covered in a blanket of pure white snow, and the majestic waves of the Sea of Japan enhance the grandeur of the natural landscape. Especially at sunset, the horizon's sun casts a crimson hue over the pine grove, creating a breathtaking scene that feels dreamlike. The pine grove features well-planned walking paths, offering visitors the joy of forest bathing, and serves as a great place for local residents to relax and unwind. The area is infused with the fragrance of the sea breeze, making it an ideal spot to take a break during your travels.
