🗺️ Lake Mashu

📝 Introduction

Heal your soul in the mysterious lake with its clear blue waters.

📖 Details

Lake Mashu is a volcanic caldera lake located in the eastern part of Hokkaido within the "Akan Mashu National Park" area. This massive lake, with a circumference of about 20 kilometers and an area of approximately 19.6 square kilometers, is surrounded by a designated special protection area. Due to the steep cliffs surrounding it, visitors cannot approach the lakeshore, but they can enjoy the beautiful lake view from nearby observation decks. In the Ainu language, Lake Mashu is pronounced "ka-mu-i-to," meaning "Lake of the Gods." The lake is known for its exceptional transparency, reflecting the blue sky, and its unique, clear, and layered hue is referred to as "Mashu Blue." The lake's scenery changes continuously with the clouds and the position of the sun, and on windless days, the stunning blue appears even more captivating. There are three observation decks nearby, allowing visitors to view Lake Mashu from various angles. The "Mashu First Observation Deck" is conveniently accessible and is the most popular viewpoint; in 2022, it was renovated from a Resthouse into the "Mashu Lake Kamuy Terrace," offering excellent views from indoors. The "Mashu Lake Third Observation Deck" provides a close-up view of Kamuishu Island, showcasing dynamic scenery. The "Ura Mashu Observation Deck" is less crowded, allowing for a tranquil and leisurely experience facing the lake.
