🗺️ Otome no Namida Waterfall (Furepe Waterfall)

📝 Introduction

The waterfall, known as "Otome no Namida" or "Maiden's Tears," quietly cascades down from the sheer cliffs.

📖 Details

A 20-minute walk from the Shiretoko Nature Center leads to a waterfall, which is one of the "Shiretoko Eight Scenic Views." This waterfall, falling from a cliff about 100 meters high, does not originate from a river but is formed by snow and rain from the Shiretoko mountain range seeping underground. The waterfall flows towards the sea, cascading down like a string of teardrops, earning it the nickname "Otome no Namida" (Maiden's Tears). Along the trail, you can enjoy the unique breathtaking views of Shiretoko, including vast grasslands, panoramic views of the Shiretoko mountain range, and a mixed forest of coniferous and broadleaf trees. Various wildlife inhabit the forest, and there is a chance to encounter wild birds and Ezo deer. However, be cautious as black bears are known to roam in the area. At the observation deck overlooking the waterfall, you can take in the full view of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko mountain range. Additionally, the seasonal scenery, such as the fresh greenery in early summer, the vibrant autumn leaves, and the snow-covered landscapes in winter, are all worth seeing. If you visit during the snowy winter, it is recommended to join a guided tour.
