📝 Introduction
The island where one can worship the gods from afar, "Kudaka Island," is the highest sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
📖 Details
Located in the mountains of Chinen Kuteken in the southern part of Okinawa Island, Nanjō City is the highest sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This area is considered a forest where deities descend, and besides the grand ceremony of the kingdom's highest goddess, Amamikiyo, known as "Onishika," many important rituals are held here. In 2000, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, forming part of the "Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom and Related Heritage."
Within the designated sacred forest, there are prayer sites known as Uganju (ウガンジュ). At the deepest part of the forest, there are renowned sacred places such as Daikuri, Mikuri, and Yorimitsu. Daikuri and Yorimitsu also have locations with the same names within Shuri Castle, both backed by massive Ryukyu limestone. When one stands there in tranquility, they can feel their spirit being cleansed by the solemn atmosphere.
As this area remains a sacred site for local prayers, visitors are asked to observe etiquette to show respect. Additionally, it is strictly prohibited to take away any plants, animals, or stones.
