🗺️ Onioshidate Park

📝 Introduction

The unique landscape created by the lava from the eruption of Mount Asama and the stunning alpine plants make it a remarkable scenic spot.

📖 Details

Located at the northern foot of Mount Asama in the Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park, this World Geopark showcases the stunning natural wonders created by nature. In the year 1783 (Tianming 3), the eruption of Mount Asama caused lava to flow out, covering the surrounding area with cooled and solidified block lava, resulting in a unique landscape. At an elevation of 1,300 meters, various alpine plants such as the Tohoku Mitsuba Tsutsuji (三葉躑躅) and Iwakagami (岩鏡) bloom among the lava from mid-May. From late September to late October in the autumn, the diverse plants on the lava rocks turn vibrant red, providing a visual feast for visiting tourists. The park features several trails among the lava rocks, with routes ranging from 30 to 60 minutes, allowing travelers to choose based on their goals and physical fitness. Near the center, the Asama Kannon Hall, a branch of the Kōeiji Temple of the Tōei Mountain, was built to commemorate the victims of the volcanic eruption. From the temple's platform, the view of Mount Asama across the lava and the magnificent panorama of Mount Shirane is not to be missed. Next to the park entrance, there is a scenic restaurant and shop, and beside the Kannon Hall, a tea house where visitors can enjoy snacks like dango and amazake while taking a break.
